Plastics Technology Laboratories Inc. (PTLI) highlights offerings in composites testing and specimen preparation for automotive materials.

PTLI, the independent plastics testing laboratory continues to add to the variety of tests for automotive composites testing. With an exclusive focus on testing plastics, elastomers and composites, PTLI brings nearly twenty years of experience to support automotive and other industries including aerospace. 

Composite-specific test methods employed at PTLI include Short beam shear (ASTM D2344), Shear by V-Notched Beam, also known as Iosipescu shear (ASTM D5379), Void Content of reinforced plastics (ASTM D2734), and Filler Content by incineration or acid digestion (for carbon fiber filled materials). Each of these methods address the unique characteristics of fiber-dominant matrixes, and are used in conjunction with the methods used for resin-dominant injection molding grades. Composite tests performed include four-point bend flexure, and thin section compression testing of laminates.

PTLI tests composite materials in many forms including: compression-formed laminates, SMC (sheet molded composites), pultrusions, short fiber composites, cloth laminates and other types of fabrications. Resin matrix can be thermosetting or thermoplastic. Application specific tests include finished goods in whole or in part, and assembly tests such as insert retention in torsion or vertical pull-out. 

Many test methods are shared between composites and injection molded materials. There are common methods in the fields of electrical testing, impact testing, and rheology. In the area of environmental conditioning, PTLI offers thermal aging, chemical compatibility testing, and UV exposure and weathering.
