Matrix Solids Content and Matrix Content of Composite Prepreg (ASTM D3529)
|
|
|
ASTM D3529
|
|
Scope:
The method ASTM D3529 is used to determine solids content and matrix content of composite material prepregs. Matrix Content is defined as the amount of matrix present in a composite or prepreg expressed either as percent by weight or percent by volume. Matrix Solids Content is calculated by subtracting the average mass loss due to volatiles from the initial test mass. Volatiles Content can be obtained by ASTM D3530.
Test Procedure:
Specimens are machined from the customer supplied product. The specimens are dried and cooled. The weight of the test specimens is then determined to the nearest 0.1mg. The specimens are then placed in an appropriate dissolution medium and heated/refluxed (if needed) until all of the organic material is dissolved. The resulting solution is then filtered and the amount of remaining fiber is determined.
Specimen size:
80mm x 80mm
Data:
The Matrix Content is then determined as follows: Wt = (Mi – Mf) / Mi * 100
Wt = percent by weight
Mi = initial mass of specimen
Mf= final mass of specimen
Matrix Solids Content is calculated by subtracting the average mass loss due to volatiles from the initial test mass.
