Polypropylene (PP) molding and extrusion materials
Part 2- Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
|
|
ISO 1873
|
|
Scope:
This specification defines pertinent properties, test methods, parameters and sample preparation for the evaluation of polypropylene for molding and extrusion. Typically, different materials have unique requirements related to the generation of the specific properties. Following the requirements of this specification assures consistent characterization and valid comparisons of polypropylenes. This method provides a means to call out plastic materials for use in the manufacture of parts based on the material composition and specific physical/mechanical properties. End users, engineers, sellers, and buyers of polypropylene would in turn utilize the callout to specify a material for their particular application.
Specimen Preparation:
ISO 1873 allows either injection molding or compression molding.
Conditioning:
Conditioning of specimens is outlined as 40+ hours at 23C/50%RH.
Test Methods:
ISO 1873 requires a number of tests to determine rheological, mechanical,
thermal, electrical and other properties. Tests include Melt Flow Rate (ISO 1133),
Tensile testing (ISO 527), Tensile Creep (ISO 899), Flexural Modulus (ISO 178), Charpy Impact (ISO 179), Tensile Notched Impact (ISO 8256), Melting Temperature (ISO 3146, ISO 11357), Temperature of Deflection under load (ISO 75), Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion (TMA) (ISO 11359), Flammability (ISO 1210), Ignitability (ISO 4589), Relative Permittivity / Dissipation Factor (IEC 60250), Volume Resistivity / Surface Resistivity (IEC 60093), Electrical Strength (IEC 60243), Comparative Tracking index (IEC 60112), Water Absorption (ISO 62), Density (ISO 1183), Total Penetration Energy (ISO 6603), Gardner Impact (ASTM D5420), Viscosity (ISO 1628).
Data:
Data is outlined by specifications called out by ISO 1873. See individual methods for more information.
